Manneken Pis in Brussels undoubtedly ranks among its most famous and most visited tourist attractions. Brussels is also famous for the Atomium, and you can find the European Parliament, the Royal Palace, and many other landmarks here. Look at what sights and attractions Brussels has to offer.

Brussels is the capital of Belgium, and since it’s home to NATO and other European Union institutions, it is unofficially referred to as the capital of Europe. It has a population of around 190,000 residents. Brussels is a beautiful and diverse place that combines history, culture, and culinary experiences. During your visit, you can admire landmarks, stroll through picturesque streets, and discover the renowned Belgian cuisine. Let’s take a look at a few tips on what you can experience in Brussels.

Fun fact: The term “Brusel” is also used to describe a unique Czechoslovak art style (defined as soft modernism) that dominated the 1960s and 1970s. It got its name from the Brussels Expo 58 exhibition, where Czechoslovakia received the Golden Star for the best exhibition and an award for the best pavilion.

Brussels – landmarks, history, and culture

Are you a lover of history, culture, or architecture? If so, you definitely shouldn’t forget to visit the following places in Brussels:

Symbol of modern Brussels – Atomium

The iconic symbol of Brussels is the Atomium, a futuristic structure standing at 102 meters high, designed in the shape of an iron crystal lattice. The Atomium was designed by André Waterkeyn for the aforementioned EXPO 58. Originally, the Atomium was meant to be demolished after the exhibition ended, but it secured an exclusive place among Brussels’ landmarks due to its success and immense popularity among visitors.

Did you know that it’s not just a monumental monument meant only for “looking”? You can also enter the Atomium – inside the building, you have the opportunity to visit exhibitions dedicated to science and technology. At the same time, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city from the observation platform.

Manneken Pis –  “little man pee”

If Atomium is the iconic symbol, then the number one attraction in Brussels is the statue of “little man pee”, known in Flemish as Manneken Pis. It is located approximately 250 meters from the Grand Palace at the corner of Rue de l’Etuve and Rue des Grands Carmes. This bronze statue, standing at around 60 cm tall, was created by sculptor Jérôme Duquesnoy in the 17th century. Over time, more than 800 different outfits have been created for it, which you can see in the museum.

Fun fact: Did you know that even though the peeing boy in Brussels is considered the main tourist attraction, he’s not alone? In 1985, Manneken Pis got a “sister” named Jaenneke Pis, a little girl peeing. You can find her about 200 meters north of the Grand Place, in an area known for its many restaurants. If you want to see all the famous peeing statues in Brussels, be sure to also visit Zinneke Pis, a peeing dog, which has been located at the corner of Rue des Chartreux/Kartuizersstraat and Rue du Vieux-Marché/Oude Graanmarkt since 1998.

The Grand Place – the heart of historic Brussels

We already mentioned the Grand Place in the previous tidbit, and it is the most famous square in Brussels. It is surrounded by beautiful historical buildings. Its centerpiece is the Gothic Town Hall with a 96-meter-tall tower, topped by a statue of Saint Michael, the patron saint of Brussels.

While strolling through this square, you will be captivated by its stunning architecture, especially at night when the square’s buildings are beautifully illuminated. For many people, this place is considered one of the most charming squares in the world. The Grand Place is also a venue for various cultural events and markets.

The Royal Palace in Brussels – where dignity meets majesty

The Royal Palace in Brussels is the official residence of the Belgian king and is located in the heart of the country’s capital. When the monarch is present, you can recognize it by the raised Belgian flag on the main dome of the palace. The palace is open to the public only from the end of July to the beginning of September. If you want to admire its luxurious interiors, we highly recommend choosing a tour that includes the so-called Mirror Room. In 2004, artist Jan Fabre installed the artwork “Heaven of Delight” in this room. It is composed of more than one million elytra (Jewel beetle wings), which reflect the light with a metallic green hue.
