National Hug Your Boss Day

Some people dread this holiday. Others loathe it. Some are ready to jump at the bit. While, others are nervously biting their fingernails. Can you guess what it is?

National Hug Your Boss Day!

Today's the day to let your boss know you feel - even if you hate him or her. Put aside your differences for five seconds and give him or her the biggest bear hug ever. Maybe it'll change attitudes - who knows until you try. Give them some chocolates and a card while you're at it.

Pony Express Day

Remember that time when mail was delivered by the Pony Express? I hope you don't because you'd be very very old.

It all started back in 1960 before the start of the Civil War. It was the first and only fast mail service running into the American West. The route started in St. Joseph, Missouri, and ran to Sacramento, California. The route still exists and many tourists travel the road to see the abondoned stations along the way.

Today, the term "Pony Express" is trademarked by the USPS so I hope they got my form for the express written consent to use the phrase.

What Will Be Your Legacy Month

What will be your legacy? Determine that during What Will Be Your Legacy Month. If your loved ones will remember you for all your kind deeds and charitable donations, pat yourself on the back. If you'll be remembered for falling on your face during Uncle Tom's wedding, it's time to rethink your lifestyle. But, hey, this is the month to turn things around.

Though it's already half over, you still have about a week and half to change your attitudes and do something for the better. Maybe you should attend a charitable event? Patch thing up with a long lost loved one? Tell someone you care about them? Whatever it is, let's make these last few days of August positive.

My legacy is yet to be determined. I'd like to be remembered as funny, caring, and supportive. But, I've got a ways to go before I need to worry about my legacy. Feel free to leave comments about your fingerprint on this Earth.

Mail Order Catalog Day

Does anyone still purchase products from mail order catalogs anymore? I guess certain purchases make sense, like Omaha Steaks (I get their catalogs all the time). But, for pretty much everything else, the Internet is an easier and quicker option.

Anyway, today's the day to wipe the dust off of your mail order catalogs and order something the old school way.

National Meaning of "Is" Day

What is the meaning of is? You can't even ask the question without using the word, so it's pretty hard to define. It's the third person singular form of the word "be," which is also hard to define without going into existential mumbo jumbo. Spend today trying to define is in your words without using the word be. It's actually sort of a challenge.

National Resurrect Romance Week

National Resurrect Romance Week is for those who've loved and lost. Get your old lover back this week with a romantic date or maybe just a warm-hearted phone call. If you feel you deserve them back, then go for it! This is the week to do it.

If you don't want your old lover back, then go out and search for a new one. Go on a speed dating session, or out to a bar with friends, or go on a blind date. Nothing should stop you from finding the right person. Forget the past, and move on to the future.

International Left-Handers Day

The Left-Handers Club of America has determined this day as International Left-Handers Day - a celebration of southpaws everywhere. According to their website, there were 20 regional events in the U.K. alone to honor left handers in 2001. Some pubs switched to left handed tools like corkscrews, and patrons were only allowed to drink with their left hand. They held competitive contests and games that pit righties versus lefties (with the lefties coming out on top)

I can only hope that America celebrates lefties the way they do in England. If you're interested, I've compiled a small list of famous lefties.

Bill Clinton
Barack Obama
Jimi Hendrix
David Letterman
Kurt Cobain
Michelangelo
Robert DeNiro
Marilyn Monroe
Oprah Winfrey
John McEnroe
Ty Cobb

Vinyl Records Day

Time to go old school for Vinyl Record Day. Chuck the iPod and shut down iTunes for just today. Listen to some happenin tunes today from a former era. Think nostalgia, think the 60's and the 70's, think good vibrations and happy times. By the way, will anyone let me borrow their record player?

National Panini Month

It's National Panini Month! These mouth-watering sandwiches have exploded in popularity recently, and it all makes me want one of those grill presses in my home. I could literally eat a panini at every meal! Those who know me wouldn't deny that.

Duran Duran Appreciation Day

Yesterday was Duran Duran Appreciation Day. Break out the old record player and jam to beats like "Rio" and "Hungry Like The Wolf," two of their most popular hits.

The popular British band not only rocked out on stage with hit beats, they were also innovators. With raunchy and interesting videos, Duran Duran helped put MTV on the map in the early 1980's. The video for "Girls on Film" gave them national attention because of lewd sex scenes and eroticism too hot for TV. The buzz kept rolling because of it, and since then Duran Duran has sold over 100 million records.

Particularly Preposterous Packaging Day

Particularly Preposterous Packaging Day is in honor (?) of items that are so unbelievably hard to open you throw it on the ground in frustration. These products include aspirin, DVD's, and anything heavy-duty wrapped like video game controllers. Like the great Ellen Degeneres once said, you need a pair of scissors to open a package of scissors. Anything else out there that's extremely hard to open?

National Fresh Breath Day

Here's a holiday that makes sense to me: National Fresh Breath Day. I'd rather celebrate and honor this day than Barbie in a Blender Day (no offense to anyone that might be offended by that statement).

If you've ever been around someone with habitually stinky breath, you understand this holiday. Fresh breath is key to making friends, meeting new people, and just being an overall cleanly person. Having bad breath makes people stay farther away from you or just avoid you altogether. We don't want that now, do we?!

Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Use mouthwash whenever possible. Pop some mints or gum in between. Do whatever you must to deter bacteria from producing stank in your mouth.

National Underwear Day

Fresh Pair sponsors the 7th annual National Underwear Day - a day to celebrate your undergarments. Whether you wear boxers, briefs, panties, or thongs, it's time to show off the goods.

For those in the New York City area, Fresh Pair is having its annual underwear fashion show featuring such brands as 2(x)ist, Diesel, and DKNY. I buy my boxers at Wal-Mart usually but that's besides the point. If you need the latest and greatest trends in underwear fashion, then this is the place to be. They even give away some free pairs of high-end underwear and other apparel.

Single Working Women Week

Expect to hear a lot of "You Go, Girl!" this week as it is Single Working Women's Week. Ladies, get out there and celebrate! Take a day off of work, perhaps? Maybe catch a movie or go out for drinks with friends. Whatever makes you feel happy, you need to do it this week.
