Lasagna Day

Delizioso

Today’s zany holiday is most likely Garfield the Cat’s favorite (unless of course there’s a sleep 18 hours a day-day holiday, but I am pretty positive there isn’t). Why? Well because today’s outrageous holiday celebrates Garfield’s favorite food. It’s whacky holiday Lasagna Day!

Lasagna is a popular Italian dish made of alternating layers of cheese, tomato sauce and pasta. It is commonly made with either ricotta or mozzarella, but the traditional recipe, Lasagna alla Bolognese, uses only Parmigiano-Reggiano. However, lasagna has been modified to create many different and interesting dishes, including an Eastern European variation called Łazanki which dates back to the sixteenth century.

In the spirit of weird holidays celebrate Lasagna Day by creating your own variation on the dish. Try for example a Cajun crawdad lasagna. You’ll need the ‘‘holy trinity” of Cajun vegetables Onions, Bell Peppers and Celery; crawdad (instead of meat) spicy red sauce (sauce piquante) flavored with cayenne pepper sauce and cajun spices (spices are essential in Cajun food). As for cheese, try a ricotta and parmigiana. Or to keep with the spicy-theme, a spicy jack cheese! Create your own interesting variation, or keep it traditional. It’s up to you how to celebrate this bizarre holiday!
