This annual event takes place in Kansas City, Missouri. Unfortunately, no groundhogs are actually involved, it's only called the "Groundhog Run" due to the unique nature of the race--it's entirely underground. 3000 runners from across the country participate in 5k and 10k events, not because they're particularly fond of subterranean exertions, but because they all love a good cause. They donate the proceeds and donations they accumulate to the Children's Therapeutic Learning Center and its many programs.
I don't know about you, but I can't think of a better way to raise money for education than running with 3000 people in a dark tunnel, fighting to be the first one out. Sounds like one heck of a good time!
But hey, if you want to get involved, or even celebrate in your own way by running around a dark room, be sure to bring along a pedometer to track your progress and a flashlight to avoid running into things.
