Today's zany holiday is Accoding to Hoyle Day.
When I first read that I was just as confused as you are right now. But read on.
Mr. Edmund Hoyle wasthe man who gave us our 52-card playing deck. He was this cool guy in 18th century England who was pretty much the resident know-it-all. He published his Short Treatise on the Game of Whist in 1742. Whist was a popular card game that he sold to his buddies and clients. Although he croaked before he got to see the game really take off, the phrase, "According to Hoyle" has lived on after his death to refer to any set of thorough directions. So whenever you find yourself playing a rousing game of poker, 21 Blackjack, or Go Fish, tip your hat to Mr. Hoyle.
Naturally, to celebrate this day, we suggest you go buy yourself a nice deck of promotional playing cards.
We're looking for amusing playing card stories. Send us some.
